I thought I would share my experience and save someone the aggravation I went through on this top loading washer shaking and banging during the spin cycles. For months my washer got progressively worse to the point it started ‘walking’ around our laundry room. I changed the damper pads (though mine were still intact but very dry). This was relatively easy using the 4X4 block of wood method. Unfortunately the damper pads only reduced the shaking and vibration but didn’t eliminate it.
I already made sure the machine was level by checking it with a carpenter’s level front to back and side to side. The centering springs were intact and looked good as well. I measured each spring with a ruler and they were all 5 1/4″. But the washer still shook and vibrated.
I got down and checked the leveling legs again. I sprayed each one with WD-40 and then I noticed something: There is a nut on each of the front legs but on mine these nuts were loose! I learned these nuts were for locking down the leveling adjustment. So I got a 3/4″ wrench and tightened the nuts, which locked the legs in place.
NO MORE SHAKING! No banging. No vibration. I can put heavy loads in the washer again and it is smooth and quiet!!!
I don’t know why these nuts being loose caused the problem but I speculate it allowed the legs to wobble slightly??? Whatever – it works and I don’t have to buy a new washer with low water technology and no agitator that everyone complains about.
